kernel 2.6.10 is out.
it is far much better than the previous version, i’ve been using fedora’s rpm package and its quite buggy, my fedora cant shutdown properly, it freezes after unmounting all drives. the fedora package also contain weird bugs that seem to be connected to everything.. my X (x-windows/xorg) sometimes freezes and i lost control over the mouse and keyboard.. and this thing happened after i’ve updated to kernel-2.6.9-1.681_FC3. it was known to be buggy, i realised that in Fedoraforums.org, but i hate to see the “%number updates available” in RHN and also out of curiosity.
but most problems that i noted above has been fixed in the 2.6.10 release. now, i can shutdown properly, no more sudden freezes, no more 90% processor usage by JRE and everything seems to be executing faster (atleast for me it is). overall it is good, far more than i’ve expected.
I dont know if this new release has fix the sys_chown bug that was released by Raptor but from what i’ve tested;
$ uname -r
2.6.10
$ ./raptor_chown /etc/shadow
[..snip..]
Error: Not vulnerable!
after my experience with fedora 2 and 3, their rpm’ed kernel package taste like shit, they’re buggy, their files are quite huge and all of their mirrors are slow. compiling the kernel yourselves gives much better performance
it does waste some precious time, but its for a good cause.
